The Cold Claws Of Oblivion

Jazz quartet videos, hip-hop track & more!

A track I co-produced with hip-hop pioneer The Last Skeptik was recently released on his beat-tape vol. 2. Stream it on Spotify by clicking on the picture.

Your Beat Tape Sucks, Vol. 2

My new record label, Turquoise Coconut, has released its first two albums, both from my contemporary violin duo Mainly Two (keeping it in the family for the meantime!). We first released Poetry / Synergy independently in 2014, so we’re delighted to be bringing them to a bigger audience via the wonderful world wide web. Click on the album artwork to download your copy from iTunes.

Also on the releases side, the début recording from Four Plus Three, a collaboration between The Kate Williams Trio and The Guastalla Quartet, will be launched at the 606 Club next week, June 8th. It features some beautiful originals and arrangements by prominent jazz pianist and composer Kate Williams. Here’s the tour schedule:

Lastly, my jazz quartet has been pleasantly busy of late, so we’ve had the chance to get a few up-to-date videos and photos together. Here’s a small selection. Many thanks to Carla Rees for the wonderful shots.

Turquoise Coconut

I’m overjoyed to announce my new musical adventure. Marie Schreer and I have just founded Turquoise Coconut, a record label dedicated to new music and independent artists. Our first offerings will be digital re-releases of our Mainly Two début albums Poetry & Synergy, recorded in 2014. I look forward to sharing some wonderful music with you all in the future. Watch out on May 20th & 27th! Keep life colourful.

Nahualism

Meraki remix EP out tomorrow

Tomorrow, Meraki will release an EP of ‘Vistas’ remixes, featuring the impressive likes of The Last Skeptik, Jonny Drop, Anton F, Mitch Wade Cole, Cameron Michael Graham and Trol23. Download links will follow, but you can stream them on Soundcloud right here:

Here’s a live video of our single ‘Contours’ that we filmed at our studio home Fat Tank.

EMANATA EP 3

‘Steel Skies’ is the third release from EMANATA. From the dark hip-hop vibes of the lead single ‘Nahualism’ to the space jazz of ‘Shut Eye’, the EP is unified by its strong sense of groove, inspired by the likes of The RH Factor, Snarky Puppy and José James. Recorded live in Trinity Studio, North London, and mixed and mastered by synth player Nikola Kovacevic, ‘Steel Skies’ is a refreshing addition to the electronic jazz catalogue of the moment.

Synergy

Part 2 of Mainly Two‘s sophomore release went out yesterday. It features the more contemporary works of the first Mainly Two repertoire. Stream/download below and enjoy some far-out sounds from some brilliant minds, performed by myself and Marie Schreer. Huge thanks once again to all involved in the project, to name but a few: all the composers (you are wonderful musicians and people to work with); genius recording engineer Josh Green; Michael Goodson for his stunning design.

Poetry

After over one year of hard work on innumerable people’s behalf, my violin duo Mainly Two has released its first studio recording, Poetry. There are too many people to mention who have had some involvement in this project, but a major thank you goes out to all the composers for their beautiful music and their patient collaboration; to Anna Lawrence for her magical artwork; to the selfless Josh Green for his unceasingly generous hard work in getting these studio recordings sounding as crystalline as possible; and to my wonderful duo partner Marie Schreer for making our work together such a joy. You can listen to the album right here, right now! Follow the links in the player to download (or preferably purchase) your very own copy. Physical copies will be available in the coming months. Poetry features music of a vaguely neo-romantic nature, and is sure to caress your ears, whether you be driving, chilling or heading off to sleep!

The follow-up LP, Synergy, will be released in just five day’s time. It features the more contemporary of the compositions, for those of you interested in new sounds and ideas. Keep your eyes peeled!

Meanwhile, I’ve been active in other interesting areas recently. I’m delighted to be working with a talented bunch of artists on a collaborative project called ‘Spun Through Shadows’. It’s a fascinating convergence of music, electronics and dance, all tied together in an immersive performance. We’re giving our premiere on December 6th, and will be reprising several times in 2015. Check out the official website, and the video below, for more information.

My group Project Avartan has been invited to perform at the prestigious Sage Gateshead on December 18th. Having never played there before, I’m over the moon about it. It’s going to be a smashing gig with my talented colleagues Rekesh Chauhan and Alok Verma, so if you’re in the area, grab a ticket and head on over!

Recently, I happened to spot myself mentioned in Jazz UK magazine, which is one of the first official indications that I play jazz! It’s a small step for mankind, but a landmark leap for John Garner. See if you can spot me in this interview with radio DJ Tina Edwards.

I’ve been particularly busy in the studio recently with Emanata, The Future Ancients, The John Garner Quartet and MooK. There’ll be a plethora of new sounds heading your way within a short while. Here’s a shot from my recent recording session at Konk Studios with MooK. Début studio recording on its way!

Lastly, here’s a lovely video by Aesop that The Guastalla Quartet can be heard playing on. We recorded this recently for composer Josephine Stephenson. Enjoy!

Something Like That…

My new group Emanata has today released its first EP, ‘Something Like That’, on Love Buzz Recordings. You can check it out below. If you like it, please download it and share it with your friends, family, grandmas, farmyard animals and various household domestic appliances.

Emanata début

It’s finally here! My project Emanata is finally seeing the light of day! Our début EP ‘Something Like That…’ will be released on Monday 24th February on Love Buzz Recordings. This EP has been in the works for quite some time, and features input from some incredibly talented musicians, from groups including AZEDIA, Ruby & The Vines, Polaroid 85, The Fenchurch 3io and Invisible Soul Assassins. I’m very proud to be spearheading this amazing project. In the meantime, here’s the music video to ‘Keep Off The Grass’, performed by Ana Mrdjanov and filmed by Ben Rider:
